Maximum depositional age estimation revisited

چکیده

In a recent review published in this journal, Coutts et al. (2019) compared nine different ways to estimate the maximum depositional age (MDA) of siliclastic rocks by means detrital geochronology. Their results show that among these methods three are positively and six negatively biased. This paper investigates the cause these biases proposes solution it. A simple toy example shows that it is theoretically impossible for the reviewed find correct even best case scenario: MDA estimates drift ever smaller values with increasing sample size. Dental age estimation in Belgian children: Demirjian's technique revisited.

AIM The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of Demirjian's dental age estimation in children in a Belgian Caucasian population and to adapt the scoring system in case of a significant overestimation as frequently reported. We selected 2523 orthopantomograms of 1265 boys and 1258 girls, of which 2116 (1029 boys and 1087 girls) were used for estimating the dental age with the Demir...

Maximum Contact Map Overlap Revisited

Among the measures for quantifying the similarity between three-dimensional (3D) protein structures, maximum contact map overlap (CMO) received sustained attention during the past decade. Despite this, the known algorithms exhibit modest performance and are not applicable for large-scale comparison. This article offers a clear advance in this respect. We present a new integer programming model ...

Renyi Entropy Estimation Revisited

We revisit the problem of estimating entropy of discrete distributions from independent samples, studied recently by Acharya, Orlitsky, Suresh and Tyagi (SODA 2015), improving their upper and lower bounds on the necessary sample size n. For estimating Renyi entropy of order α, up to constant accuracy and error probability, we show the following Upper bounds n = O(1) · 2(1− 1 α )Hα for integer α...

Chain-Ladder as Maximum Likelihood Revisited

It has long been known that maximum likelihood estimation in a Poisson model reproduces the chain-ladder technique. We revisit this model. A new canonical parametrisation is proposed to circumvent the inherent identification problem in the parametrisation. The maximum likelihood estimators for the canonical parameter are simple, interpretable and easy to derive. The boundary problem where all o...

The multiroute maximum flow problem revisited

We are given a directed network G = (V,A, u) with vertex set V , arc set A, a source vertex s ∈ V , a destination vertex t ∈ V , a finite capacity vector u = {uij}ij∈A, and a positive integer m ∈ Z+. The multiroute maximum flow problem (m-MFP) generalizes the ordinary maximum flow problem by seeking a maximum flow from s to t subject to not only the regular flow conservation constraints at the ...
